Film Photography
I love going to art museums and galleries, seeing art in everyday spaces. But I hate that art is so fragile. It cannot be touched, and older pieces are often protected in semi dark, plastic prisons. I wish there were more artworks that were meant to be touched, are able to be cleaned and disinfected, or stimulated more senses.
I learned photography with black and white film. I rolled my own film, developed my film, printed my photographs. The smell of developer and fix always lingered in my hair. When digital photography developed, I resisted. I spent hours in the darkroom while everyone was crowded in the new computer labs. Consequently, when I finally decided to check out digital photography I learned everything through the perspective of traditional film photography.
As technology develops further, I have found that I can continue creating photographs despite my disabilities. Because of this technology, I am no longer confined to silver gelatin prints on fiber. I choose to print on metal now. Metal is luminous, it lasts longer, and it can be easily cleaned.
